Last night was literally incredible.
First of all, so many of my friends/aquaintences were there! Before the show, I kept giving history lessons about Eluveitie and Gaulia, and then talked a tonne with Kirsten’s friend who was to interview Chrigel. I’m sort of an idiot though, Chrigel walked by way before the show while I was outside, and I should have gone up to him, I have to ask him one simple, fucking, question! Arg. Anyways.
While in good company, great things happen! The first thing that happened was the near strip search show they play outside. Once inside, we got pretty much right up front, to the left or stage right. But I knew right away I was too far left for my liking for Eluveitie, but we’ll get to that later. The first band to play was called Threat Signal. They weren’t bad, but they aren’t something I would ever listen to again. The best part about them was that they were Canadian.
The second band up, Revocation. Although they aren’t exactly my type, they played fucking hard, and were a riot. They were really good, and I was impressed. I had heard they would be good, and they brought it. My only complaint really, was that the mic cut out a few times, I think it was the snake, and the bass was WAY too fucking loud. I was standing infront of the stack of subs, and I felt like my insides were melting. They were from Boston, Massachusetts.
And now to the best part of the show…. ELUVEITIE!! I was actually surprised how many people were there for them over bodom. None of them knew what they were talking about, but nonetheless it was refreshing. I, very greatfully, switched places with Nathan for that set, because he was more center stage and he was there for Bodom mostly. Then Paris showed me a picture of their set list in Chicago, and there was a tonne of songs off of their new album, so I was immediately a bit dissapointed. The album isn’t really released yet, but I got it over a month ago, so I’m fluent with it, and it’s their worst album in my opinion. Anyways. They opened with the Otherworld intro, it was the same they used last year, I sort of expected them to use the prologue for Helvetios. The first couple of songs were their older stuff, which is great, off of Spirit. Then they announced thet they’d be playing a few new songs, so they played Havoc, which isn’t bad at all, The Siege, that I pretty much hate except for the melody in the middle of the song, and then Meet the Enemy, which sounded so much better live than on the album. Then they played Dominion, and closed it out with the obvious Inis Mona. Honestly, I was pissed. I really expected them to atleast play Thousandfold, or Uis Eluveitie, or my favourite Your Gaulish War. Or even Of Fire, Wind and Wisdom. They did start a wall of death though, the initial wall was very strong, but there wasn’t enough momentum to keep it going through the whole song. They sounded great, looked fantastic, but I was overall dissapointed. They are still my favourite band though.
Then there’s Children of Bodom. I’ve seen them before, as I have Eluveitie. But honestly, as much as I’m familiar and used to love COB, I’m sort of over them. Their last album wasn’t that great, and their first few were the best. The crowd was massive, I had a great spot right infront of Roope, but him and Henkka switched around a lot. They sounded amazing, except the damn mic cut out a few times. They started out playing some of their newer songs, so I was worried that their whole set would be new stuff. But about half way through, Alexi asked the crowd if they wanted some ‘old school’ bodom, and everyone nearly went mental. They pretty much played older stuff from then on, finished, then came back out with a two song encore. Strong finish, my brother caught Jaska’s stick, and I think my highlight of the set was when Alexi spun his guitar around, the way he did it was incredible, and just purely fucking awesome. That must be a strong snap/nut locks he has.
So the show ended, I bought an Eluveitie tour shirt, Kirsten bought a Children of Bodom shirt that was practically made just for her(with the finnish flag in the middle, and all down the sleeves), and we were ushered outside, because that venue really blows. We all stood around talking, and then everyone, literally everyone except like two security guards left, and my brother and I sort of just, ran into Roope. We talked for a little while, got a very dark picture, and then we made our way home. As amazing as it was to talk to Roope, I really wish it would have been Chrigel instead, or Anna… But overall the night was amazing!
Some noteworthy things that went through my head, it was my brother’s first big show (he’s seen soulfly and otep, but nothing COB status), and that I really wish Jake would have been there. So, the night was epic, and nothing short if it, and the whole drive home I talked about Eluveitie and Gaulia, and the tattoo I’m getting, and things of that nature.
The End.
